Alnwick Castle was Harry Potter’s home

Harry Potter The magical make believe world of Harry Potter has captured our imagination like nothing else.  At least my imagination that is.  I so love his world and oh boy I would love to be able to go between that world and this world.  To be able to access Diagon Alley from this world to that world….I’d be there in a heartbeat.  Hogwart’s castle was mostly made up, but they really did use a real castle.  Read on for a little bit more info.

Alnwick Castle You may recognize this photo as part of the Harry Potter universe. Alnwick Castle is a real castle from the medieval ages and it is situated in Northumberland, England . It was used to film parts of Hogwarts Castle in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ films.

Alnwick Castle has seen its fair share of drama. It was captured in 1136 by Kind David I of Scotland. Again In 1172 abd 1174 William the Lion, King of Scotland surrounded the castle but he was captured outside during the battle of Alnwick.

In 1212 King John ordered the demolition of Alnwick Castle because he accused the Lord of Alnwick of plotting against him. Thankfully for history and future generations, King John’s instructions were not fulfilled. The castle was also a part of the historical drama during The War of the Roses.

Broomsticks lesson You see the castle during flying lessons with Madame Hooch. The actors are actually outside the grounds of Alnwick Castle.

Harry potter is also introduced to Quidditch on the grounds of Alnwick Castle, I have to be careful here because I’m tempted to say Hogwart’s LOL.

Alnwick Castle courtyard Here is a shot of  “Hogwart’s” students milling around between classes.  I remember this courtyard from the movies.
Outside Alnwick Castle Don’t you think this is the way a castle should look like? When I think of a castle, this is the image that comes to mind. Weather beaten stone, different towers and very tall arched windows. Lots and lots of windows, quite a job of cleaning them I imagine.  The building itself is very very tall with a flat roof nothing compared to our modern houses where ceilings are roughly 8-9 feet high and roofs that are triangle in shape.

Do you want to have your own castle? It really is possible to build one. If your dream is big enough and your desire and determination strong enough, then yes you can build your own castle. Dreams, desire and determination trumps money. That means if you’re thinking ” I don’t have the money” well your dream, desire and determination will help you find ways to build it EVEN if you have no money. Where there’s a will there’s a way.
